In American Legion baseball Monday night, the B-7 Area Tournament continued at Oregon Trail Park in Gering. The hosts from Gering faced off with Chadron. Chadron already had one loss under its belt and needed a win to stay alive. Gering came into the matchup undefeated in the double elimination tournament.
Platte Valley Companies jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Chadron, but the Nationals tied the game up in the top of the fifth with three runs of their own. And that’s where the score stayed for a long time.
To the bottom of the ninth, where Chadron starting pitcher Coy Bila returned to the mound for his ninth inning of work. Bila started by hitting Quinton Janecek with a pitch. Janecek then moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Brent Barge. That brought Mike Gutherless to the plate, and he ended up hitting a line drive to right field that scored Janecek with the winning run, as PVC walked off against Chadron with a 4-3 win.
Gutherless finished 2-for-4 with the game winning RBI and a run scored. Janecek went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Austin Abbott started on the mound for Gering and allowed three runs across six innings of work. Dalton Scott pitched three scoreless innings of relief, and got the win.
Gering now moves into the area championship game against Alliance. Regardless of what happens, Gering has clinched a berth at next week’s Class B State Tournament. Alliance is hosting this year’s state tourney, so they automatically qualify. If the Spartans want to win the area title tonight, they will have to beat Gering twice.
