There was plenty of postseason American Legion baseball from this past weekend. Gering’s Oregon Trail Park is the site for this year’s B-7 Area Tournament, and the opening round got started on Friday.
Top seeded Chadron took on sixth seeded Morrill in the first game, and the Nationals came away with an 18-3 win over the Vigilantes. Phillip Soto went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Morrill in the loss, while Andrew Avila was 1-for-3 with two RBI’s.
In the second game Friday, 4th seeded Ogallala upset 3rd seeded Alliance 8-3.
Then in the nightcap, 2nd seeded Gering shutout 5th seeded Sidney 10-0. Chris Palomo got the win on the mound for Platte Valley Companies, allowing only one base hit over 5 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts.
At the plate, Dylan Radzymski had two RBI’s, while Mike Gutherless scored three runs for PVC.
On Saturday, Morrill met up with Sidney in a loser-out contest. Post 17 defeated the Vigilantes 13-4, ending Morrill’s season. Andrew Avila went 3-for-4 with two runs scored from his leadoff spot in the Morrill lineup. The Vigilantes finished the year with an 0-21 record.
Alliance then took on Chadron. The Spartans needed to win to avoid elimination, and Alliance did just that, handing Chadron their first loss by the score of 2-1.
Then Saturday night, Gering faced off against Ogallala, and PVC stayed unbeaten with a 7-2 win. Brent Barge was the winning pitcher for Gering, as he allowed one run over 5 1/3 innings. Offensively, Barge also hit leadoff and scored two runs. Mike Gutherless batted second and went 2-for-3 with four RBI’s and two runs scored.
Sunday brought about two more loser-out games. Chadron knocked Ogallala out 10-0, while Alliance sent Sidney home 6-1. Gering will now play Chadron tonight at 6:00. If Chadron loses, the Nationals will be eliminated. If Gering loses, they will still have a chance to battle back for the championship.
Meanwhile, the Bridgeport Bombers were competing at the C-7 Area Tournament in Overton. Bridgeport was seeded 5th out of eight teams, and the Bombers knocked off 4th seeded Imperial on Friday 8-7. On Saturday, Bridgeport fell to top-seeded Alma 5-1. That put the Bombers into a loser-out game Sunday, and Bridgeport fell again to 6th seeded Overton 8-3. Bridgeport ends their season with an 8-18 record.
